A few areas in Cuffe Parade and Geeta Nagar in Colaba faced a 100 per cent water cut on Friday which will continue all day on Saturday due to a leakage in a 600 mm water main pipeline on Madam Cama Road outside the Mantralaya main gate. In a statement on Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said, “A sudden leak occurred in the 600 mm diameter water pipe in front of Mantralaya Entrance No. 1 in Sector A. The repair work of this water pipe has been taken up on a war footing.”
The civic body said that amid the ongoing repair work, the water supply to some areas will be affected for 24 hours. These are: Cuffe Parade (11.30 am to 1.45 pm), GD Somani Marg (1.45 pm to 3.10 pm), Colaba Koliwada (6.30 pm to 6.50 pm) and Geeta Nagar (12.15 pm to 2.45 am).
The road in front of Mantralaya main gate closed for entry
“The water supply will remain closed for 24 hours in all these areas. After the repair work is completed, water supply will be provided in a phased manner,” the BMC stated. Water supply to these areas will likely be restored by Saturday night or Sunday morning, it said. Meanwhile, a crater has developed above the 40-metre area of the northbound portion of Madam Cama Road, in front of the main gate of Mantralaya, due to the ongoing work to fix the damaged pipeline, leading to the closure of the VIP area for commuters. The road is the only access point for the row of bungalows assigned to the ministers.
The road works are likely to take a couple of days, according to a civic official, who said, “The water leakage will be fixed within 24 hours, and after this, the road work will be undertaken.”
