During the morning rush hour, as hundreds scramble to board suburban trains at Dombivli station, a serious safety hazard emerges on platform number five — particularly at the Kalyan end, where women commuters wait. The designated space for women is dangerously inadequate for the length of 15-coach trains, and broken tiles and damaged fencing only add to the risks.
When this correspondent asked women commuters how they cope with the overcrowded, unsafe space, one retorted sharply: “What is your problem? We will stand however, we have to. Please don’t take photos. If you have any objections, take them up with the railway authorities.”
Many commuters pointed out that the issue arises mainly when 15-coach trains arrive; shorter, 12-coach trains don’t cause such problems. This frustration reflects the grim reality: women are forced to navigate dangerous conditions daily, while authorities delay action.
Lata Argade, president of Tejaswini Mahila Sangh, said, “Many women voice their concerns informally but rarely approach the station manager or railway authorities directly. It is the duty of the passengers’ association to highlight such matters.” She warned that railways appear to be “waiting for an accident” before acting, recalling the tragic Ghatkopar incident involving Monika More.
Argade urged authorities to take preventive measures immediately. “The last compartment at the Kalyan end must be managed better when 15-coach trains arrive. Women should not risk their lives just to find space to stand. They have families waiting for them. The RPF and GRP must raise awareness about prioritising safety,” she said.
At the Kalyan end, the problem is worsened by the staircase’s immediate proximity to the first compartment from the CSMT side. As some passengers alight and others struggle to board, the lack of space creates chaos and danger. Dr Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer of Central Railway, acknowledged the issue. “We are addressing 15-coach train adjustments at several stations, including Dombivli. Work to widen the platform will begin soon to improve the situation,” he said.
