Who is leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sri Lanka’s newly elected president

Anura Kumara Dissanayake has emerged as Sri Lanka’s newly elected president, securing 42% of the vote in the country’s first election since the 2022 economic collapse. The 55-year-old leader of the National People’s Power (NPP) coalition defeated his main rival, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, who garnered 23% of the vote, while outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe trailed in third. The election witnessed a high voter turnout, with 76% of Sri Lanka’s 17.1 million electorate participating in what is seen as a crucial vote for the country’s future.

From Student Activist to Political Leader

Born in Thambuttegama, around 100 kilometers from Colombo, on November 24, 1968, Dissanayake’s political career began during his student days in the late 1980s. He joined the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), a Marxist political party that led an armed uprising between 1987 and 1989, protesting against the then-government’s “imperialist and capitalist” policies. Dissanayake became a prominent student leader during this period and eventually joined JVP’s decision-making body, the politburo, by 1998.

Dissanayake first entered Parliament in 2004, running from the Kurunegala district, and was later appointed a Cabinet Minister in the Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga-led coalition government. By 2014, he became the leader of the JVP, replacing Somawansa Amarasinghe. His career also saw him rise to become Chief Opposition Whip after the 2015 general elections. Despite receiving only 3% of the vote in the 2019 presidential election, Dissanayake’s growing popularity has led him to victory in 2024, a remarkable turnaround in his political journey.

A Focus on Anti-Corruption and Economic Reform

Dissanayake campaigned heavily on anti-corruption, promising to break away from Sri Lanka’s long-standing political elite. “Politicians who promised to stop corruption have engaged in corruption; those who promised to create a debt-free Sri Lanka have only worsened the debt burden; people who promised to strengthen the law have broken it,” Dissanayake said during his campaign, addressing the need for a different leadership approach.

The new president also emphasized the necessity of addressing the country’s economic crisis, which saw inflation soar to 70%, leaving millions of Sri Lankans unable to meet basic needs. The economic collapse of 2022, which was blamed on years of under-taxation, weak exports, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, drove former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa from office after mass protests. Dissanayake’s platform focused on reversing the tax hikes and welfare cuts imposed by the current government under Wickremesinghe’s austerity measures, which many voters viewed as detrimental to their livelihoods.

The Economic Crisis and Its Political Impact

Sri Lanka’s economic collapse in 2022 was one of the worst in the country’s history, leading to a foreign exchange reserve depletion and a public debt of over $83 billion. In response, Wickremesinghe introduced a series of economic reforms that included austerity measures aimed at stabilizing the country’s currency and reducing inflation. However, many citizens continue to feel the impact, with poverty levels rising and public discontent growing.

Public frustration over systemic corruption, political impunity, and economic mismanagement paved the way for Dissanayake’s candidacy. His call for political reform and promises to dissolve parliament resonated with voters. “There is no point continuing with a parliament that is not in line with what the people want,” he stated in a recent interview with BBC Sinhala, signaling his intention to push for a fresh mandate once he assumes office.

Addressing Sri Lanka’s Unresolved Issues

During his campaign, Dissanayake also addressed other pressing issues in Sri Lanka, including the failure to investigate the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that killed over 290 people in coordinated attacks across Colombo. Dissanayake promised to reopen the investigation, accusing previous governments of evading accountability. “Authorities have avoided investigating because they were afraid of revealing their own responsibility,” he told BBC Sinhala, highlighting unfulfilled promises made by his predecessors.

A Mandate for Change

As president, Dissanayake faces the immediate task of managing Sri Lanka’s fragile economy while attempting to restore public trust in governance. “The most serious challenge is how to restore this economy,” said Athulasiri Samarakoon, a senior lecturer in political science at the Open University of Sri Lanka. Analysts have noted that cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be crucial for Sri Lanka’s economic recovery. Dissanayake has assured that his administration will work with the IMF to ensure the repayment of the country’s debt, a key concern for international investors.

His campaign’s focus on slashing taxes, increasing welfare spending, and combating corruption has drawn support from a wide range of voters, including those most affected by the economic collapse. However, there are concerns that his policies might disrupt fiscal stability. Dissanayake has tempered these worries, stating that any reforms will be carefully planned in consultation with international partners to avoid destabilizing the recovery process.

Widespread Support and Political Unity

Dissanayake’s election win has been widely acknowledged by political opponents. Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, a supporter of Wickremesinghe, took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate Dissanayake, stating: “Though I heavily campaigned for President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the people of Sri Lanka have made their decision, and I fully respect their mandate for Anura Kumara Dissanayake.” MP Harsha de Silva, a Premadasa supporter, also extended his congratulations, acknowledging the people’s choice for new leadership.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) spokesman MA Sumanthiran commended Dissanayake for his “impressive win,” emphasizing that his victory was achieved without exploiting racial or religious divisions, a significant development in Sri Lanka’s often polarized political environment.

As Dissanayake prepares to take office, the expectations for meaningful change remain high. His presidency will be closely watched as Sri Lankans hope for economic stabilization, political transparency, and an end to corruption. Dissanayake’s leadership promises to reshape the country’s political landscape as it emerges from the shadow of economic crisis.
