Maharashtra`s Advocate General Birendra Saraf has tendered his resignation citing personal reasons, officials said, adding that his resignation was accepted, reported the PTI.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed about Saraf`s resignation in the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Saraf will, however, continue in the post till January 2026, by which time the government would have to appoint someone else as advocate general, according to the PTI.
He was appointed as Advocate General (AG) in December 2022.
During his stint as AG, Saraf represented the state government in several important cases, including the Maratha reservation issue and Badlapur school sexual assault case.
Designated as a senior advocate in February 2020, Saraf has been practising in the Bombay High Court for over 25 years. He completed his law from the Government Law College in Mumbai.

He is the son of former Bombay High Court judge, Justice B. P. Saraf, who later served as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Early in his career, Saraf was also part of the chambers of former Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and previously held office in the Bombay Bar Association (BBA), representing lawyers from the High Court.
During his tenure as Advocate General of Maharashtra, Saraf represented the state government in numerous high-profile matters. These included legal challenges to various state legislations and Government Resolutions (GRs).
Saraf played a key role in discussions with the government regarding the allocation and clearance of land for the proposed new High Court complex in Bandra (East), which is to be constructed on approximately 30 acres of land.
Additionally, Saraf defended the Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, an ambitious social scheme of Maharashtra government introduced by the state for woman. In August 2024, the High Court dismissed a PIL that had challenged its implementation.
He also appeared for the government in hearings related to the 10 per cent reservation for the Maratha community introduced in 2024, as well as during legal proceedings linked to the quota agitation in South Mumbai led by activist Manoj Jarange Patil and others.
