The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved a major scheme aimed at redeveloping slum clusters in Mumbai into integrated housing projects, with the goal of improving living conditions and strengthening urban infrastructure in the city, reported the PTI.
The new scheme will be carried out by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), a government agency focused on upgrading slums and providing modern housing to families living in informal settlements. The Cabinet decision aims to fast-track large-scale redevelopment across Mumbai and improve the city’s overall infrastructure.
According to a statement from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ office, the scheme will help transform slum clusters into organised housing developments, encourage private investment, and boost construction activity. It is also expected to create employment in construction and related sectors, contributing to Mumbai’s economic growth, as per the PTI.
In other key decisions, the Cabinet also approved a state-wide sewage treatment and reuse policy covering 424 urban local bodies. The policy promotes a circular economy by encouraging wastewater treatment and reuse, thereby supporting sustainable urban development.
In Maharashtra`s Amravati, the Cabinet allocated 2.38 hectares of land in Mouza Badnera to the Amravati Municipal Corporation for a 30-year period. The land will be used to set up an e-bus depot and charging station under the Central Government’s PM-E Bus Scheme, boosting green transport and urban mobility.
On the education front, the Cabinet extended the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme to non-teaching staff in 980 aided residential ashram schools. These schools, run by voluntary organisations, cater to students from OBC communities and children of sugarcane workers.
The Cabinet also approved the establishment of a senior civil court in Akole, located in the Ahilyanagar district, and sanctioned the creation of necessary staff posts.
An amendment was passed to the Maharashtra Prevention of Fragmentation and Consolidation of Holdings Act, 1947. The amendment removes a proviso under Section 8(b) and adds a new clause to Section 9, aimed at preventing land fragmentation and encouraging better land consolidation.
The Maharashtra Cabinet also approved a new gems and jewellery policy that targets to attract Rs 1 lakh crore investment and create five lakh employment opportunities in the key sector.
The policy is aimed at boosting businesses related to gold and silver jewellery besides diamonds and precious stones, said a statement issued by the office of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after the Cabinet meeting.
The policy has set a target of attracting Rs 1 lakh crore investment and creating five lakh new jobs in the segment, said the statement.
