The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has announced the launch of a new air-conditioned bus route, A-84, as part of its ongoing effort to modernise and expand its fleet. The new service started on Sunday.

Route A-84 runs between Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk (Museum) and Oshiwara Depot, offering passengers a scenic and efficient commute via the newly developed Swarajyarakshak Dharmaveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road. This route is aimed at improving east-west connectivity while providing comfort and convenience through air-conditioned buses.

Fare structure

The minimum fare on this route is Rs 12, while the maximum fare is Rs 50, offering affordable travel with enhanced comfort.

Weekly operation

Route A-84 will operate seven days a week, making it a reliable daily travel option for commuters across Mumbai.

BEST authorities have encouraged citizens to take full advantage of the new service and assured smooth operations throughout the route.

While speaking to mid-day.com, BEST PRO Dattatraya Dagade on Monday said that the newly launched bus on Route A-84 is fully electric, keeping in mind the environmental impact of traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.

“Electric buses are more environmentally friendly and help reduce the carbon footprint compared to petrol and diesel-powered vehicles,” Dagade explained.

He also highlighted that commuters can track the bus in real-time using the Chalo app, ensuring a smoother and more predictable travel experience.

Dagade added that BEST is ready to scale up services based on public demand.

“If we receive a good response, we plan to increase the frequency from every 40–45 minutes to every 20–25 minutes,” he said.

Explaining the rationale behind choosing the Coastal Road for this route, Dagade pointed out the time-saving and cost-effective benefits for commuters.

“A cab or ride-hailing service like Ola or Uber could cost around Rs 500–Rs 600 for this route, while our AC bus will charge a maximum of Rs 50,” he said.

Looking ahead, he added that if the route performs well, BEST may expand services to connect more suburbs via the Coastal Road, offering a broader network of affordable and sustainable travel options.
