Raj Thackeray`s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) said that it would hold a protest march in Thane district on Tuesday against the railway administration in connection with the Mumbai local train tragedy on Monday, reported the PTI.
Four commuters, including a GRP constable, died and six were injured after falling off a moving and overcrowded local train in Maharashtra`s Thane district during the office rush hour on Monday morning, officials said.
The incident occurred between Diva and Kopar railway stations when the train was going towards Kasara, an official said.
The protest march, which will be held on Tuesday, will start from Gavdevi Maidan at 9am and culminate at Thane railway station, MNS Thane-Palghar president Avinash Jadhav said, according to the PTI.
Everyday, at least 8-10 passengers die in suburban train-related mishaps, he claimed.
“An MNS functionary had written to Central Railway warning of an accident in the area but no action was taken. I urge people to take part in Tuesday`s protest so that the railways ends its negligent attitude,” Jadhav said, as per the PTI.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, MNS chief Raj Thackeray criticised the state of Mumbai’s urban infrastructure and local train system after Mumbai local train tragedy.
Raj Thackeray`s statement came hours after four commuters died and nine were injured after falling off two overcrowded local trains in Maharashtra`s Thane district during the morning rush hour on Monday.
Raj Thackeray, in his statement, posted on X, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and said such incidents are happening far too often in Mumbai.
“Every day, people are injured in Mumbai’s local trains, and yet no one seems to care,” said Raj Thackeray.
He pointed out that despite repeated appeals, no government has addressed the long-standing demand for a separate Mumbai Railway Corporation to manage the city’s railway challenges.
The MNS chief said, “We too had made this demand, but till today, no government has taken it seriously.”
He criticised the unplanned urban growth in the city, saying, “Large numbers of people are moving to Mumbai. Roads, bridges, and metro lines are being built, and tall buildings are being approved — but there’s no proper plan for parking or traffic.”
