Rupani, a low-profile RSS man, rose through the ranks to become the chief minister of Gujarat in 2016. He was born in Rangoon (now Yangon, Myanmar) and joined an RSS shakha as a schoolboy. He was a member of the Sangh’s students wing – the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and later on joined the BJP.
