Discussion on survey schedule prepared to canvas in 21st Livestock Census and assessment of the preparedness of States and Union Territories were the key agendas of the Sensitization Meeting for 21st Livestock Census held in New Delhi today. Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Secretary, Alka Upadhyaya chaired the meeting in the presence of senior officers of States/UTs and members of Technical Committee. In a release, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said that the 21st Livestock Census is due in 2024 and will be conducted in participation of States/UTs during the period of September to December this year with the use of mobile technology and further transmitting the data online. The enumeration will be done in all villages and urban wards.
The Ministry further said, Animal Husbandry Statistics is the backbone of policy formulation as well as implementation of various programmes in Animal Husbandry Sector. It said that Livestock Census is a massive door-to-door field operation in which data are collected from each and every household taking actual count of domesticated animals and birds to finally asses the total livestock wealth of the Nation.
Livestock Census is conducted across the country in every 5 years since 1919 to produce Animal Husbandry Statistics. The last livestock census was conducted in 2019.
