KAKDWIP
(South 24 Parganas): The bodies of eight of the nine
fishermen
trapped in a
trawler
that
capsized
during a storm in
Bay of Bengal
on Saturday were recovered a day later. One fisherman is missing.
The trawler, FB Gobindo, with 17 fishermen on board, had set out to catch hilsa but sank near Bagher Char in Sundarbans. A giant wave washed eight on the deck overboard, but they were rescued by another trawler three hours later.
However, nine fishermen sleeping inside the trawler were unable to escape after it sank.
Still trembling in fear: Rescued fisherman
Coast Guard and local fishermen’s organisations towed the trawler ashore around 12.30 pm on Sunday. The deceased, aged between 27 and 55 years, were mostly from Kakdwip. One of the deceased, Mukundo Boiragi, was from Teghoria in North 24 Parganas.
One of the rescued fishermen, Samir Mondal, said, “I am still trembling in fear. I can’t forget that terrifying moment.” Kakdwip Fishermen Welfare Association secretary Bijon Maity said, “The process of identifying the bodies is underway.”
