IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Monday
MUMBAI: Rainfall has crossed the 1,000mm-mark for this season. Till Sunday morning, the Santacruz weather station recorded total rainfall of 1,208mm and the Colaba observatory 1,163mm.
Mumbai also surpassed its monthly average quota of
July
rainfall within a fortnight.
Expect the wet spell to persist throughout the week, said officials at India Meteorological Departmen (
IMD
), which has issued a ‘yellow’ alert — heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places — for Monday, and an ‘orange’ alert — heavy to very heavy rains very likely at a few locations — for Tuesday.
This year, monsoon onset was declared on June 9, but the entire month saw very le-ss rain activity. The city recorded 347mm of rain, falling short of June’s average rain quota of 537.1mm.
Monsoon activity finally picked up pace in July and even surpassed the average monthly requirement within a fortnight — 861mm of rain till Sunday morning. Most of July’s rainfall occurred over the past week. On July 7-8, IMD recorded 268mm rain, the second-highest 24-hour rain in the month of July in the last 15 years.
In the 24-hour period ending Sunday 8.30am, IMD’s Santacruz and Colaba observatories recorded 142mm and 92mm of rain, respectively. Among the areas that recorded over 100mm of rain were Dahisar (171.5mm), Ram Mandir (151.5mm), and Vikhroli (131.5mm), according to IMD data.
Meanwhile, Thane city witnessed average rainfall of 26mm in since Saturday midnight, as per the data.
