The Government today said that it facilitated the admission of more than 2500 Scheduled Castes (SCs) students in private schools under SHRESHTA scheme. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in a statement said that the Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA) aims to fill the gap in service-deficient SCs dominant areas through the efforts of grant-in-aid institutions and residential high schools offering high-quality education. It also intends to provide an environment for socio-economic upliftment and overall development of the Scheduled Castes (SCs).

The Ministry said that the scheme is further modified to provide easier access to the meritorious SC students in the best schools across the country for their educational and Holistic Development. It added that each year a specified number of meritorious SC students will be selected through the National Entrance Test for SHRESHTA to be conducted by the National Testing Agency. These students will be admitted to the best private residential schools affiliated with CBSE and State Boards.
