President Approves Chief Election Commissioner Bill and GST Amendment

President Droupadi Murmu today gave her assent to the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023. It was passed by the Parliament in the recently concluded Winter Session.

 


The new legislation provides for the appointment, salary, and removal of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs). According to the provisions, the CEC and ECs will be appointed by the President upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will consist of the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet Minister and Leader of Opposition or leader of the largest opposition party in Lok Sabha.

The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners shall be paid a salary which is equal to the salary of a Judge of the Supreme Court. The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners shall hold office for a term of six years from the date on which she/he assumes  office or till she/he attains the age of sixty-five years, whichever is earlier. The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners shall not be eligible for re-appointment.

 

President Murmu also gave her assent to the Central Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2023.
