Skyrocketing potato prices

Consumers in Odisha already grappling with the soaring vegetable prices further felt the pinch in their pockets as the price of potatoes has increased by Rs 10-15 per kg in the last couple of days.

The retail price of potato has reached Rs 45-50 per kg in Odisha market causing huge inconvenience to the common man. As per market insiders, the short supply of potatoes in the wholesale market because of a strike by traders in neighbouring West Bengal has led to a huge price rise.

Potato was available in the market at around Rs 30 per kg on July 20. However, the price was doubled only after a day to the utter dismay of the consumers. Now, it has reached Rs 50 per kg. As potato is an essential vegetable, consumers are forced to buy it despite the soaring price. The situation has severely affected the budget of the common man.

“The price of potato has soared to Rs 50 per kg in Bhubaneswar market. However, we have no option but to buy the vegetable as it is an essential kitchen item,” rued Bidyadhar Jena, a Bhubaneswar resident.

“If the price of potato soars to Rs 50, I wonder how the common man would survive!” said Jayant Routray, another resident of Bhubaneswar.

As per the retail traders, the supply of potatoes from West Bengal has been completely halted as the traders in the neighbouring State have been continuing protests for the last four days. Even the amount of potatoes stocked inside cold storages has reduced considerably.

As per the state traders association, the potato mission launched during the tenure of Naveen Patnaik’s government has completely failed. While Odisha requires 14.5 lakh tons of potatoes every year, the State is only producing 80,000-90,000 tons of potatoes per year.

“Odisha government needs to speak with West Bengal to find regular supply of potatoes to the State. We are severely short of supply and the matter needs to be addressed immediately,” said Sudhakar Panda, General Secretary of Odisha traders association.
