Odisha Collectors asked to remove encroachment from govt land

The Odisha government has directed all district Collectors to take steps to free encroached lands.In a letter, the additional chief secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department asked the district Collectors to make a realistic survey of rural and urban encroachments and remove them as per the extant rules. “Concerns have been made by the Government on large-scale encroachments at a high-level meeting. It is pertinent to mention that one of our primary work is optimum management of land resources and allocation of adequate land to developmental purpose & different sectors of the economy,” read the letter. Also Read: Scanner on ‘illegal’ hotels & buildings near Bhitarkanika National Park“However, due to encroachment of Government land in both urban and rural areas, at times, smooth allocation of land for developmental purposes is impaired. Moreover, the opportunity cost of encroached Government land is unrealized in such cases. Also, the concomitant litigation arising out of illegal encroachment remains a challenge to all of us,” read the letter. In the letter, the Collectors have been directed to protect Government lands by fencing and displaying boards by utilising the funds they received. They have also been asked to send an action taken report to the Revenue and Disaster Management Department each fortnight.
