A BOAT with 15 students and two adults on board capsized while travelling ferrying them from a village to school, in the Lundu district in southern Sarawak.The incident in Sungai Kayan, Kampung Selampit, occurred about 6.30am today. So far, 12 students and the two adults have been rescued, while two girls and a boy are still missing.The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department reported that rescue teams have been deployed to find the three still missing“The kampung folk have also joined in the search operations along with the Bomba teams. The survivors are 12 students, one adult passenger, and the adult boat operator,” it said in a statement.“They managed to swim away from the capsized boat and were rescued by villagers and taken to shore.”The three still missing are Alsma Jithil (14), Helena Petrus (17), and Vilkie Wilson (15).The cause of the boat’s capsizing is under investigation.Lundu district is located about 100 kilometres from the capital of Kuching. – August 20, 2024.
