(Image: Getty)British holidaymakers travelling to one very popular destination have been issued an urgent warning over a little-known rule that, if broken, could result in jail time.Tourists heading to Turkey this summer must remember to bring the correct documentation if they’re looking to drive around the country, or else risk breaking international law.Whether it’s renting a car or making a road trip in your own vehicle, Turkey is strict on all foreign road users carrying around the correct license documents.Just like over 140 other countries around the world, Turkey requires all motorists on holiday to travel with an international driving permit (IDP).Motor Match warned: “The 1968 IDP is required in countries like Turkey, South Africa, and Vietnam, while the 1949 IDP is needed in places like the USA, Japan, and Australia. Not having an IDP can lead to serious consequences.Turkey requires tourists to carry international driving permits if they want to drive around. (Image: Getty)”According to the official IDP website, driving without an IDP in countries where it’s required can result in fines, vehicle seizure, or even arrest. Essentially, you’d be driving without a valid licence, which is a punishable offence.”If travelling through multiple countries, you might need more than one type of IDP. Always check with the embassy of your destination country or your car hire company to confirm the specific requirements.”The Post Office has also issued a similar warning for not just Turkey, but all countries that require IDPs, reminding tourists to always double-check before booking a holiday. Trending The warning read: “The IDP you need depends on what country you’re visiting. Check the requirements of the country you’re planning on driving in. If you’re travelling through more than one country, you might need more than one type of IDP.”You need to have a valid Great Britain (GB) or Northern Ireland driving licence to get an IDP.
