Orbán cabinet ready to introduce heavy fines for airline delays

Gergely Gulyás, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, talked about heavy, significant damage-causing fines for airline delays on a Monday government press briefing.The Hungarian government believes that the airlines are the number one problem for delayed and cancelled flights in Hungary. Therefore, they would like to increase the airlines’ fines, causing them significant financial damage. “We do not see another option but to make it simply unworthy to risk for the airlines”, Mr Gulyás highlighted in a government press briefing on Monday. PM Orbán said before that he regarded the significant delays and cancellations unacceptable.Gulyás said the government ordered the customer protection authority to conduct a severe investigation in the case of substantial delays. He added that the airlines were behind 60% of the delays.Márton Nagy, Hungary’s national economy minister, summoned László Tóth, the CEO of HungaroControl, to his office on Monday. After their talk, he said HungaroControl must do everything in its power to secure undisturbed traffic.
