Spanish town hailed as ‘Europe’s most beautiful and best kept secret’

However, Villajoyosa, Europe’s best hidden gemfor 2024, also consists of brilliantly painted facades along a really gorgeous beach – it’s surprising more travellers don’t know about itThe town of Villajoyosa in Spain (Image: Getty Images)A relatively unknown Spanish town with coloured houses and a stunning beach has been crowned as Europe’s most-beautiful and best-kept secret. Images of some of the best-known and most popular places in Europe can be found lining most British travel junkies’ Instagram feeds – like the stacked tiny houses of Cinque Terre on the coast of Amalfi, or the vibrant streets of Burano iin Venice. One that is not on everyone’s radar is Villajoyosa – which has earned itself the title of Europe’s best hidden gem for 2024. Like Amalfi, it contains brilliantly-painted facades and a picturesque beach. It’s surprising that more travellers aren’t aware of the small Spanish town, which is tucked away between Alicante and Benidorm. As well as earning the honour in Time Out, it has also topped the European Best Destinations’ list of the best secret destinations for this year. But Villajoyosa is not the only hidden treasure on the list. In third place is the beautiful coastal village of Primošten in Croatia. Bokodi, a floating Hungarian village, claimed the fourth spot. The tiny town 50 miles west of Budapest has been built on stilts originally erected in 1961. The decision was made after energy from a nearby power plant warmed the water of Bokodi Lake and stopped it from freezing. Despite the plant closing in 2015, the destination is incredibly popular for photographers nowadays. It’s surprising more people don’t know about the town (Image:Getty Images/iStockphoto) And one country that is a big hit with tourists has been found to be the most affordable – if you book in advance. Research conducted by the consumer gurus at Which? delved into European package holidays to uncover the destinations offering the best value, and to compare the cost of last-minute bookings versus early bird deals. The experts discovered that holidaymakers could pocket the biggest savings when booking a trip to Portugal, emphasising that it’s cheaper to book ahead rather than leaving it until the last minute, reports the Daily Record. A week-long package holiday in this sun-drenched paradise was £176pp cheaper, on average, if booked around eight months in advance. So if you’re eyeing an August getaway, it’s worth securing your trip around December – giving you plenty of time to save. A couple could therefore save up to £352 on a holiday, with the biggest savings to be had in the Algarve. This popular gem on Portugal’s southern coast offers a wealth of sights and activities. Boasting 150km of breathtaking coastline, the Algarve’s crowning glory has to be its beaches. The region is peppered with stretches of coast framed by cliffs overlooking the sea, making it an idyllic spot for holidaymakers seeking a nature-filled getaway.
