A piece of history will be created this weekend by Newcastle United and Sunderland. With the Women’s Championship attendance record set to be broken. The Newcastle United women’s team travel to Wearside on Sunday. With Sunderland announcing that so far (Friday morning), around 14,000 tickets have been sold for the Stadium of Light derby match. The attendance won’t get close to matching the 20,000+ crowds that Newcastle United women’s team have attracted when playing at St James’ Park in the lower leagues. However, with the ticket sales Sunderland have reported so far, Sunday’s derby crowd will create a new record attendance for a second tier women’s league match. The existing record is 11,137, which was for Sheffield United v London City two years ago.Newcastle United women’s team coach Becky Langley is looking forward to it…“I don’t buy that it’s just another game. “Sunderland’s a special match.“Incredibly important for our region, where you need incredible focus.“There is always that extra bite in a derby and the girls are saying they don’t want to get beat by the Mackems. “We have got to be bold. “We can’t be vanilla. “Our fans are really loud and travel in such numbers.“At away games last season they outnumbered the home supporters. “When we went to London City Lionesses at the start of this season the whole stadium was black and white.“We all know a north-east team needs to be in the Women’s Super League.“Let’s hope that soon, top players won’t have to leave the north-east for an Arsenal or a Manchester City in order to play for England.”
